Episode 02 – Halloween Special

October 20th, 2009

zombiesaraWith the spookiest season of the year upon us, we discuss some recipes Sara’s collected and created that are guaranteed to chill you to the bone! In an interesting twist, she’s attached these recipes to some classic horror films, so you can enjoy your horrifying beverage along with some terrific Halloween entertainment.

HALLOWEEN HOLIDAY DRINK RECIPES

Film: Rosemary’s Baby

Drink: Rosita (did not make-up)
1 shot Campari
1 shot tequila
Half shot dry vermouth
Half shot sweet vermouth

Directions: Stir in rocks glass over ice.
Notes: Not that tasty, but the process and taste of the drink fits the era and feel of the movie very well.

Frailty

-The Meeks Maker (did make-up)
1 shot bourbon
1 shot OJ (freshly squeezed)
Half shot Campari

Directions: Squeeze OJ in rocks glass over ice. Add bourbon, then campari
Notes: Created while watching this horror movie for first time. The taste of the drink was as harsh and frightening as the movie.

The Lost Boys

-The Vampires Kiss &/or Bloody Scream (did not make-up)
2 shot lime gin
4 shots tomato juice
Half spoon raw horseradish
Dash Worcestershire Sauce
Dash Tabasco Sauce
Splash Red Wine

Directions:Mix ingredients in pin glass over ice. Add celery stalk.
Notes: Also fits the film The Monster Squad! Chose these two movies not just for their portrayals of vampires/Dracula, but because they can be movies you watch earlier in the day. They are light with that 80’s, nastalgic, throw-back vibe. Jerzy recommends using vodka in place of the lime gin…which we found not as tasty.

The Exorcist

-Captain Howdy (did make-up!)
1 shot bourbon
1 shot Grand Marnier

Directions: Add ingredients to rocks glass over ice.
Notes: AKA “The Power of Christ Compels You” But who wants to order a drink with this name? SUPER DUPER TASTERIFIC!!!
Additional Note: Add Cola to the above and you have a -The Dark Side (did make-up!!)

Dawn of the Dead (2004 Remake)

-The Suicide (did not make-up)
Half shot Vodka
Half shot Gin
Half shot light Rum
Half shot dark Rum
Half shot dry vermouth
Half shot sweet vermouth
2 spoon Grenadine
Cola

Directions: Mix all ingredients in pint glass over ice, top with Cola.
Notes: AKA The Zombi Suicide. Drink this as your “zombi attack plan”!

The Shining

-Red Rum (did make-up)
2 shots Dark Rum
Big Red Cola

Directions: Pour Rum in rocks glass over ice, top with Big Red.
Notes: Red color is fun. Tastes surprisingly good. Can’t say the fun factor of the drink matches the movie…but the name sure does!

Jerzy and I are starting a new segment where we try your favorite drink recipes and critique them on the show. We just ask that the recipes be within reason and the ingredients aren’t too difficult to find. If your recipe makes the show (whether we like it or not), we’re going to add the recipe to our show notes on our website…and we’re going to send you some free swag!

Or if you have a drink and story you’d like to share with us…we want to hear from you!

Presentations abound as Sara and Jerzy introduce themselves, their views on cocktails, the mission of the podcast, and future segments for the show. As the hosts of the new podcast SNC, they describe their cocktail of choice (at the moment) and why they’re drinking it: The frame of mind, situation, and activity best for the beverage.

They also discuss the rules for self-named drinks and provide recipes for the drinks they’ve created themselves!

Jerzy shares:
The Penny Jar (like a boiler maker…but CHEAP!)
In pint glass pour: 1 can cheap beer,
add: 1 shot inexpensive bourbon/whiskey

Sara shares:
Jackie Nipple Grabber
Fill rocks glass halfway full of ice
Add: 1 shot gin (fruitier gins recommended),
1 shot cranberry juice,
fill glass with tonic water,
add a splash of lime juice or lime wedge
