Super Fun Tour Stop 02 – Logan Elementary

Friday, March 18th, 2011

The second stop on the Kids Read Comics Super Fun Tour was Logan Elementary in Ann Arbor, Michigan!

There KRC co-founder Jerzy Drozd led his “Writing With Images” workshop for a group of 25 5th graders in Ms. Bankey’s classroom. Our deepest thanks to Ms. Bankey’s class and Logan Elementary for supporting our mission to get more kids reading and making comics!

More images from the KRC Super Fun Tour will be collected in our Picasa album.

Best of all, Ms. Bankey was sporting the Super Fun Tour t-shirt, and got it signed by the artist!

Next stop: the Dexter District Library! Check the Super Fun Tour Page to see if we’re coming to a town near you!

Kids Read Comics Extravaganza March 12!

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Mark your calendars, comics enthusiasts in the Southeast Michigan area! On Saturday, March 12 from 10 am to 8 pm we will be holding a free event at the Ann Arbor Art Center!

The KRC Extravaganza will be a one-day celebration of all-ages comics and the cartoonists who make them. The event will be open to the public and offer free activities where you’ll be able to interact with cartoonists as they work, or even participate in hands-on workshops where you can make comics of your very own!

It’s going to be a full day of getting up to your elbows in comics making. Here are some of the events planned:

Quick Draw!
Imagine an episode of “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” starring a quartet of quick-thinking cartoonists, and you’ll begin to get the picture of Quick Draw. It’s improvisational cartooning with plenty of audience participation.

Storytelling Workshops
Learn how a cartoonist uses drawings, panel size, and crazy sound effects to immerse their readers in the story! You will be led in an interactive discussion on some of the fundamental comics storytelling principles, after which you’ll be invited to create a short comics story of your own!

Free Sketches for Kids!
Get a sketch of your favorite character or your own creation, drawn by local participating cartoonists.

Free Comics for Kids!
Throughout the day we will be giving away free comic books for kids and teens.

If you’re an artist in the SE Michigan area (that includes Northern Ohio!) and you’d like to help out at this event or participate in some of the comics events and workshops, contact us! We’d love to have you!

You can help spread the word about the event via this handy PDF Flier, or use some of the web banners below!

Get a FREE COMICS PROGRAM at your school or library!

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Kids Read Comics has a goal: get kids reading (comics) and get libraries and school involved.  In advance of our two-day Kids Read Comics Celebration in Dearborn last June, we held a contest to see who could promote KRC best at their library and we had some great entries.  This year we want to make it easier for all libraries to get a free program!

If your library would like a free program put on by teaching cartoonist Jerzy Drozd, just do the following:

1. Contact Edith Burney at eburney @ chelseadistrictlibrary.org to schedule an event between now and June 15th at your library/school!   Programs are subject to time availability and location.  If travel becomes an issue, Jerzy has successfully led workshops via SKYPE!

2. Commit to promoting Kids Read Comics on your library/school website, and in your community.  You will receive a press-kit to help you promote your free program as well as KRC.

You can choose from the following program options:

Draw Dynamic! (9-12 yrs) 1.5 Hours
Explore some of the many tricks in a cartoonist’s bag to make
characters leap off of the page! Join cartoonist Jerzy Drozd in a
hands-on workshop where you’ll create action scenes that will set your
readers aquiver!

Robots vs Monsters! (9-12 yrs) 1.5 Hours
Make an army of robots, an army of monsters, and send them off to
battle for world supremacy! In this hands-on workshop cartoonist Jerzy
Drozd will instruct you on how to design and draw an implacable horde
of robot soldiers, followed by an exercise in using random shapes to
create a maniacal mass of monsters. You’ll then be invited to create a
comic where you’ll decide who wins the battle!

Write With Images (Youth/Teens) 1.5 Hours
Learn how a cartoonist uses drawings, panel size, and crazy sound
effects to immerse their readers in the story! Cartoonist Jerzy Drozd
will lead you in an interactive discussion on some of the fundamental
comics storytelling principles, after which you’ll be invited to
create a short comics story of your own!

Comics: A Pathway to Learning (Adults, Teachers) 2 Hours
As teachers find a variety of uses for comics, graphic novels and
manga in the classroom, they need to understand the complex thinking
and deep skills required to both read and create them. In this
workshop, work with cartoonist Jerzy Drozd to explore the convergence
of literary and artistic disciplines inherent in comics and see how
comics can be a powerful way to build reading comprehension skills,
such as prediction, inference, and fluency.

We can’t wait to come to YOUR library or school, and we hope to see YOU at KRC 2011!
